Jeanette contemplates the climb of Whale Rock

A good, steady climb takes us to the top (left) of this huge, bare (and aptly named as it resembles a giant beached whale) rock that slumbers beneath the hot sun. The climb rewards us with great views as well as a sense of achievement.

From Canyonlands, we drive to the nearby Dead Horse Point State Park

Dead Horse Point is a promontory above the Colorado River that has a narrow access that enabled cowboys to easily use it as a corral. Today, it provides unrivalled views of a tight turn in the Colorado River as it flows way below us towards the Grand Canyon.

In the small town of Moab, we check-in to the Best Western Canyonlands Inn - the very comfortable hotel that we used in 1995. Repeating our previous stay, we walk to the Moab Diner for our evening meal. As previously, the service is chaotic but provides us with a good value meal.

(10) Saturday, June 5th: As usual, the day begins sunny and it is already hot when we drive to downtown Moab to get our usual supplies of water, coke, muffins, and bananas at the City Market, where there are civilised parking arrangements. The temperature today is forecast to reach 102F - a day which we will spend in Arches National Park, and where we have scheduled a couple of strenuous walks.

Arches National Park is located five miles north of Moab and we begin our visit by photographing some of the rock formations near the entrance to the park and those alongside the section of the park road near the Visitor Centre.
