At the top of the main street there is a trullo church that contains an unusual crucifix painting. Surrounding the cross are several
saints including Peter and Paul, a portrait of Mary Magdalene, and figures representing Adam and Eve.
In contrast to the tourist area with its souvenir shops etc (right) we find a section of the town where the trulli look neglected,
and more natural
In the afternoon, we drive a few kilometres south of Alberobello to the town of Martina Franca. There are few other people about
as we find some notable buildings, particularly the Basilica de San Martino. There are the usual narrow streets, but they are on one
level rather than connected by steep stairways we have become accustomed to finding. In the square overlooked by the Basilica we find
a creperie where we share a chocolate and nut crepe with ice cream
The medieval core of Martina Franca is adorned with a number of examples of Baroque architecture including (left and above) the Church
of San Domenico.
This evening we again dine alone and our table enables us to enjoy the excellent views towards Fasano and
the coast. The set menu provides us with an appetiser of three small bruschettas; Verdure Su Un Lettino Di Purea Di Fave (mashed beans
with vegetables); Filetto Di Branzino Gratinato Al Formo (fillet of sea bass baked gratin); and Frutta Di Stagione (seasonal fruit).
The perfect end to another lovely day.
May 27th: another sunny day that we begin by exploring the countryside between Fasano
and the coast
In attempting to find the Roman ruins at Agnazia we get lost in an area devoted to agriculture (including some ancient olive trees)
and to a flock of sheep - each animal with a bell around its neck
Eventually, we find the Farco Archeologico Di Egnazia - the ruins of an ancient walled city, founded on this coastal site at least
as far back as the 5th-Century BC.
After spending an hour in the site's museum (which contains some excellent exhibits, particularly
relating to the burial practices conducted here), we explore the ruins:
